Prints of ‘Dead 2 Me’ are currently available in my online store along with some other prints and zines, for a limited time only.
I shot this photo a little more than a year ago during my first day of documenting the protests that broke out in Los Angeles (and across the world) after George Floyd was murdered. I’ve only made it available for purchase a few times since then.
I described this day as one of “the scariest days of my life” in a personal essay for L.A. TACO, that I poured my soul into during one of the most challenging points of my career.
I also spoke to L.A Times columnist, Gustavo Arellano about the experience and other protests that I’ve covered over the last year, for his daily podcast ‘The Times’ recently.
I recently published three stories on L.A. TACO from an on-going series on hand-washing stations and portable toilets that I’ve been working on for more than 14 months.
At the start of the pandemic last year, the city rolled out hundreds of hygiene stations to homeless encampments. Early on, I found that many of the hand-washing stations weren’t being maintained daily in my neighborhood. Elsewhere, homeless advocates and unhoused residents documented similar conditions across the city.
After publishing a story for the old CurbedLA, Adrian Riskin from MichaelKohlhaas.org reached out to me about a month later with daily assessment records that he obtained from the sanitation department. The records confirmed what I observed on the streets. Over the next several months he kept obtaining records while I monitored units on the sidewalks.
Over the summer I applied for the USC Annenberg Center For Health Journalism 2020 Data Fellowship and was awarded two grants.
I recently discussed the project with Kate Cagle from Spectrum News.
Read pt. I, pt. II and pt. III of the series and please share if you’re on social media.
